About Afro Pick Series at Queens College

The Afro Pick series was created to tell the narrative of different people of color. In "Dearest Grandpa", the artist reflects on the profound impact her grandfather has had on her life. She examines his journey from the South, raising seven children, earning a degree in mathematics, and building a career as a teacher. In "The Observer of the Human Condition", the artist explores themes such as greed and its influence on the ecological system, addressing broader societal and environmental issues.

In total, there are six Afro Picks located around various buildings at Queens College. Workshop of Shortt also incorporates an interactive element in the series, allowing for the removing of the piece above the wood and replacing it with other interchangeable pieces.
